And so - it begins!

Ben, Roy & the Traffic Controller. Princes Highway, Bodalla. August 2024

Making in-roads at Walawaani Way . . .

The first building works
have Begun!

It’s been a long road of approvals, so finally seeing some physical work happening has been a relief and a huge milestone. As part of the DA, one of the conditions of the DA is the upgrade of the Princes Highway.

The next important stage is starting the upgrade of the Access – the Old Princes Highway. This road is very beautiful with some spotted gums over 250-300 years old!

It was originally an Aboriginal Track that led to Sydney. The settlers often built the highways on these tracks as they were the best routes along the Coast. The Council is allowing us to use the road for the entry to the Conservation Burial – so long as we upgrade and maintain it. We are just waiting on the final civil engineering design to be approved by Council and then a s138 certificate will be granted which will give us the green-light to start works.

Once we have the Access opened – we can quickly build the rest of the site - the internal roads & parking area, the maintenance shed and the eco-composting toilet. The Ceremony building will be built at a later stage after opening.

In 2016 Fiona walked into the Eurobodalla Shire Council to see if it was possible to do a Conservation Burial on the family farm… The answer was “YES! the farm had permissible use for a Cemetery.” This was beginning of the (so far) 8-year Journey.

A huge thank you to the Council for being the first one in NSW to approval a 100% natural burial ground
(Byron Bay looked like it was going to be but unfortunately, they hit rock, literally!
We hope they get one soon as the more the better!)
