Nesting Boxes & Tree Planting

Nesting Boxes of all Sizes

The fabulous men at Woody’s Men Shed located in Bodalla hand-crafted our first Nesting Boxes! Different sizes for different birds and mammals including the Australian Owlet-Night Jar, Crimson Rosella, Eastern Rosella, Ringtail Possum, Kookaburra and Glossy Black Cockatoos. Hopefully they find these ideal nesting boxes… we’ll wait and see!

The first regeneration Tree Planting - going well!

We’ve had a very good success rate of the 120 trees that were planted by the Eurobodalla Koala Project. It’s been quite a job watering them - Ben gets his fire-ready water truck out and each tree receives about 15L of water… Lots of small red shoots have appeared which is a good sign they have their roots established. My initial thoughts were that it will be 15 years before these trees could become useful for koalas, but apparently (as seen in Byron Bay) the koalas forage on these eucalyptus when they are just 2-3years of age….Next step is encouraging the koalas to venture from the nearby Bodalla State Forest, we might need to build a wildlife bridge to help … next project!

Instead of a gravestone, the memorialisation can be a Nesting Box… a lot more useful and helpful to our native wildlife.

The Woodys Men’s Shed made a variety of Nesting Boxes ranging in sizes from the largest one for Glossy Black Cockatoos to small possums and gliders.

Little helper - might have been a little dirty getting to school that day!

I could hardly pick this Nesting Box up because it is SO heavy…. I couldn’t believe Ben was able to carry it up the ladder and then affix it with one hand while balancing on the ladder. (It came with a bit of a cranky mood but I was extremely grateful of such an amazing feat!) Thank you Ben!

While we were getting the Mulch out of the trailer, a baby red-bellied black snake appeared… it was a lot more scared than us and was happy to get out of the trailer!

Ben’s roofing skills have come in handy with being able to climb ladders with no fear and being able to put up the Nesting Boxes. It would be great to put some little cameras inside them at some point so we can see what’s going on :)
